Rose O'Neill was a true "Renaissance Woman"- she was an illustrator, a sculptor, a designer, an artist, a novelist, a poet, philanthropist AND business woman. She was also Suffragette and a women’s rights leader working with Eleanor Roosevelt and she was a totally original individualist. She was also the highest-paid woman illustrator of the early 20th century, who ascended to the top in a thoroughly male-dominated field, at the time. And considered the first American woman cartoonist, Most importantly, She was the 1st person ever to build a merchandising empire from her work, with her invention of the Kewpie Doll. Even people who have never heard of Rose O'Neill have certainly heard of Kewpie dolls -the most widely known character until Mickey Mouse. The Kewpie doll and merchandise bearing its likeness remain collectibles to this day. And Missy has many!!!! She LOVES Kewpies, so this episode is near & dear to her heart!
