Sheela Na Gig Episode 4: Caresse Crosby
The Sheela Na Gig Podcast celebrates women in history whose strength, talent, and perseverance went largely (or completely) unrecognized or perhaps someone you don't yet know about, but should! We are dedicated to celebrating women—one per episode—who we lovingly & reverently call “our Sheelas. Caresse Crosby (born Mary Phelps Jacob), was the first recipient of a patent for the successful modern bra, an American patron of the arts, a publisher, and the woman Time called the "literary godmother to the Lost Generation of expatriate writers in Paris. She truly lived a life far outside the conventions of her time. Caresse Crosby rejected the culturally prescribed roles of women of her era and background in search of an independent, creative, and socially responsible life. The bra was perfectly symbolic- Her breaking away from the restricted life that she’d been born into. But the extraordinary life of Caresse Crosby, a notorious figure in 1920s bohemian Paris, has sadly, been largely forgotten. Let's give this Sheela some light!
