Award-winning author Fawn Brokaw Doyle shares an amazing “Sheela,” her 8th great-grandmother, Sarah Rapalje. Sarah made history in 1625 as the first child of European heritage born in New York, when it was a small Dutch colony. Researching Sarah's life and the history of New Amsterdam (later New York City) provided her with an entirely different perspective on colonial America, one that extended beyond the Pilgrims and Puritans. Fawn's historical fiction novel, Salt People of the Cloud Houses, is a window into a multicultural economic hub, where women had a voice and played an active role in its financial success and proliferation.

This is now the re-edited version! No longer missing an early & important chunk of her life! So sorry about that! Missy & April didnt realize the recording had stopped, so had to go back in & edit in that missing piece of her life. We record in a parking garage, so please excuse the echo during that part! Ok, just kidding no parking garage, but sure sounds like it! Not sure what happened there, but you, at least, now have the full & complete story of Judy Lynn Del Rey! Thank you for your patience!

Today’s “Sheela”, Judy-Lynn del Rey (1943-1986) was a New York sci-fi and fantasy editor and a woman with dwarfism who revolutionized the world of sci-fi editing with books from luminaries such as Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov, and Philip K. Dick. Between 1977 and 1990, Del Rey Books was so dominant on the science fiction and fantasy market that they had 65 different titles reach a bestseller list. Del Rey brought us many of the classic sci-fi greats and was instrumental in obtaining the rights to publish novels based on George Lucas’s “Star Wars,” selling 4.5 million copies months before the first movie was even released. Del Rey Books continues to be a publishing leader in science fiction to this day, but not enough folks know who Judy-Lynn Del Rey is and what an indelible mark she left on the Sci-Fi world and the role of editor.

Check out this episode to learn more & let us know what you think? We’d love to start a conversation. Thanx for listening!

On the night of April 26, 1777, 16-year-old Sybil Ludington climbed onto her horse and set off on a mission: a 40-mile ride to muster local militia troops in response to a British attack on the town of Danbury, Connecticut. Riding all night through rain — and traveling twice the distance that Paul Revere rode during his famous midnight ride — Sybil returned home at dawn having given nearly the entire regiment of 400 Colonial troops the order to assemble. Following the battle, General George Washington personally thanked Sybil for her service and bravery. Although every American school child knows the story of Paul Revere — largely thanks to the famous poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow — unfortunately few are taught about Sybil Ludington's courageous feat. It's about Damn time!
